Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa. When you see the mountain, you understand why. Not only is kilimanjaro the highest peak on the African continent but is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland - elevation around 900 metres - to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).
But there is so much more to kilimnjaro than her summit. The ascent of the slopes is a virtual climatic world tour, from the tropics to the Arctic. Kilimanjaro compared to Mt. Kenya is a relatively easy and the main summit of Uhuru peak (5,895m) can be reached by most climbers. It is Africa 's highest free standing mountain at 5,895 meters or 19,340 feet. It looms some 16,000 feet (4,900 meters) above the plains that spread out from its base. It is an extinct volcano, with 3 peaks: Kibo peak, Shira peak & Mawenzi peak. Kibo is the highest one (5,895m) in the center, Mawenzi is lower (5,149m) and East of Kibo, but more technical. Mount Kilimanjaro 's (Kili - easily known) third peak is Shira which is less obvious, but it's also an extinct volcano (3,962m, west of Kibo). Mt. Kilimanjaro can be climbed though marangu route, machame route, Umbwe route, Lemosho route,Rongai route.
