SERENGETI WILDEBEEST MIGRATION SAFARI

Why the tanzania serengeti wildebeest migration safari
Africa serengeti wildebeest migration is known as the greatest animal show on earth. Wild animals on the move including wildebeest, zebras, lions, elephants blanket the African serengeti landscape as far as the eye can see. And now the Serengeti wildebeest migration and maasai mara animal migration is declared the seventh wonder of the world.

The tanzania serengeti wildebeest migration safari route

The serengeti migration wildebeest move on circular route in a clockwise direction Why the Serengeti wildebeest migration occurs is because of rain or the lack of it. When maasai mara dries up grass and water supplies , the grazing wildebeest, lions, elephants, zebras, move on to the next area along the Serengeti wildebeest animal migration route where seasonal rains are falling. As the Serengeti wildebeest Migration photo illustrates, the migration is annual and peaks in different areas at different times The major wildebeest migration animal occur in June.

Over a million wildebeest participate in the tanzania serengeti wildebeest migration safari. Hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson's gazelles join them. Although lions and other carnivores do not migrate with the grazing animal, they feast on them when their paths cross. The wildebeest migration, like a discernible thread, embraces and connects the Serengeti's ecosystem much as it has done for at least two millions years.

Every year, with some seasonally dictated variations in timing and scale, over one million wildebeest leave the southern Serengeti's short grass plains in search of the grass and water they need to survive. During the wildebeest annual migration they will travel some miles devouring tonnes of grass a day. A quarter of a million wildebeest will be born but many will die.

History of Animal Migration , seasonal or periodic movement of animal in response to changes in climate or food availability, or to ensure reproduction. Migration most commonly involves movement from one area to another and then back again. This round-trip, or return migration, may be of a seasonal nature, as in the spring and autumn migration of many animal and birds. Or it may require a lifetime to complete, as in various species of Pacific salmon that are born in freshwater streams, travel to ocean waters, and then return to the stream where they were born to breed before dying.

Migration occurs in a wide range of animal, from microorganisms in freshwater lakes, which shift seasonally from deep to shallow water as a result of temperature changes; to whales, which move in autumn from subpolar to subtropical seas to have their young and then return in late spring to the colder, food-rich waters. Humans migration is there as well: The Kung bushmen of the Kalahari Desert , for example, follow migration game animal that they rely upon for food. They also leave drought-ridden areas to find other water sources. Maasai people in Kenya and Tanzania they do migrate with their animal when the serengeti or masai mara is dry in search of green grass.

In addition to round-trip migration, some migration are nomadic in nature. Nomadic migration involve irregular movement patterns that are dependent on temporary local conditions. For example, many of the large grazing animal that live in herds on the plains of eastern Africa Serengeti and maasai mara move in response to varying local conditions of food and climate. In these migration, the animal follow no regular route and do not return to any one place. Another type of migration—removal migration, or one-way migration to new sites—is exhibited by migratory locusts of Africa and Asia . These locusts are well known for their enormous mass movements when their populations peak and food becomes scarce. The migration move to new areas, almost blackening the sky as they pass overhead. Rarely do return to their place of origin.

Irruption is a specific migratory cycle occurring in extreme climates. The best-known example of irruption is seen in lemmings of the arctic tundra. These small animal reach a peak in their population every three or four years, at which point the migration overland in great numbers. Most of them die in the process; only a few survive to start the migration cycle again. Another migration pattern is re migration, in which the round trip is divided between generations: the first generation of animal migration to an area and reproduces, and the return trip is made by their offspring.

January
The wildebeestl migration is in the southeastern Serengeti on the short-grass plains after the short rains which have nurtured fresh grass. This month and December are the peak months for zebra birth.

February
The short-grass plains are the main feeding ground for some two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Predators lurk close by, feeding on the newborn. This is the main month for wildebeest calving.

March
At the beginning of the long and heavy rains. Clouds, growing in intensity, appear from the south and occassional lightning illuminates the night sky. The short-grass plains' pastures are nearing exhaustion and the newborn wildebeest babies can keep up with the herds.

April
This is the heaviest rainy month and the wildebeest migration are almost evenly scattered on the short-grass plains.

May
There is good forage still available but water begins to be a limited factor. Now the vast wildebeest herds begin to coalesce with columns containing hundreds of thousands wildebeest stretched over many km as they had across the woodland zones into the Western serengeti where new food and water has been generated by the rains around serengeti Grumeti.

June
During thid month the rains come to an end and the animal herds leave the black-cotton-soil plains, crossing the Grumeti River where many wildebeest drown every year providing food for the crocodiles who lurk at crossing points. In a normal year they will be in Seronera/Moru kopjes area.

July
This is when the animal migration now heads northwest briefly leaving the park as they enter the serengeti Grumeti Controlled Area, with a small portion of the herd heading towards the Lobo area. Visitors should note that morning temperatures have fallen sharply.

August
In this monhth the animal migration and the ever-attendant predators trailing now cross the Ikorongo controlled Area. The various branches of the migration begin to meet up. The migration in a normal year should now be in the northern Serengeti and entering Maasai Mara. It is still cold in the mornings.

September
The wildebeest wildebbest migration has now entered Kenya's Maasai Mara Game Reserve just across the northern border from the Serengeti. Temperatures begin to rise and the skies are blue by day.

October
This is the driest month in the Serengeti with the bulk of the animal migration absent and gone in to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve where there is always plentiful water and better grazing for the plains animal at this time of year.

November
As if sensing the oncoming short rains with clouds gathering in the sky, the animal migration begins its trek back home to the Serengeti. Flame trees are beginning to blossom and migrant birds start to arrive.

December
The wildebeest migration increases its pace as it heads towards Serengeti's southern plains where the short rains are generating the grass. It follows the Loliondo boundary of the serengeti park and the zebra begin to give birth

The weather in Tanzania and best time for serengeti wildebeest migration safari

The Serengeti's climate is warm and dry. The tropical rainy season in serengeti is from March to May, with short rains from October to November. The Serengeti is lush and green after the rains, but a steady drying up follows which inhibits plant growth and encourages the wildebeest migration in search of waters.

With altitudes ranging from 920 to 1,830 metres average temperatures vary from 15 degrees to 26 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperatures are experienced from June to October.
